WYWH is a nostalgic, kitsch-y, and historical blog that takes a look back through history, through the lens of our most whimsical form of communication: Postcards!
With a postcard, one often says very little in words, but says so much more in the act itself. A postcard says “I miss you,” “I’m thinking about you,” and sometimes “you don’t visit me often enough.” But with those few words, scribes are usually saying something larger; Something like “I love you” or “I care about you” or “you’re important to me.”
In these brief glimpses into people’s lives, we also get a glimpse into history. What happened on December 4th, 1941? What did people say to each other the day after Black Tuesday? What was going on as thousands were being drafted to Vietnam? Usually, something fairly mundane, because life keeps happening, regardless of whatever else is going on around us. In that mundanity is the profound. In that simplicity is the meaning.
*Disclaimers*
I do my best to look at the history of locations & references in postcards and will not post cards that could be considered offensive or insensitive. However, since I am one person with my own biases, there is a chance I could miss something or not have the right context to understand it. If I post something that is harmful or offensive, please let me know and I will remove it.
If any of these postcards are to/from you or an immediate family member and you would like the card back, please let me know and I will return it to your possession. If you wish for it to be taken down as well, please let me know.
